Orland Park prohibits keeping exotic and dangerous wild animals as pets, including big cats, primates, venomous reptiles, and large constrictor snakes. Illinois Dangerous Animals Act (720 ILCS 585) also applies.
Orland Park's animal control code prohibits keeping wild, exotic, or inherently dangerous animals as pets in all residential districts. Prohibited animals include but are not limited to: big cats (lions, tigers, leopards, cougars), bears, wolves and wolf hybrids, primates (monkeys, apes), venomous reptiles, large constrictor snakes (over 6 feet), crocodilians, and other animals not customarily domesticated. The Illinois Dangerous Animals Act (720 ILCS 585) also prohibits possession of dangerous animals statewide. Common exotic pets that are typically allowed include small reptiles (non-venomous), small caged birds, ferrets (legal in Illinois), rabbits, and small rodents, subject to general nuisance rules. USDA-licensed exhibitors and accredited zoos are exempt. Contact Orland Park Code Enforcement at (708) 403-6225 or Cook County Animal Control at (708) 974-6140.
Possession of prohibited exotic animals can result in fines of $500 to $2,500 per animal, animal seizure, and potential criminal charges under state law. Animals are typically transferred to licensed sanctuaries.
