San Diego County prohibits exotic animals from running at large. Exotic pet ownership is regulated by both California Department of Fish and Wildlife (restricted species list) and County Code Chapter 6. Wild, exotic, or dangerous animals require special permits or are prohibited.
County Code Chapter 6 makes it unlawful for any person owning or having custody of any exotic animal to permit it to run at large. California Fish and Game Code Section 2118 and Title 14 CCR Section 671 maintain a restricted species list that prohibits or requires permits for many exotic animals including most primates, big cats, bears, wolves, venomous reptiles, and certain other species. The County may impose additional restrictions through the animal control ordinance. Exotic animal owners must maintain secure enclosures that prevent escape. County Animal Services has authority to seize exotic animals that pose a public safety risk. Some species require USDA permits for possession.
Keeping prohibited exotic animals may result in seizure, fines, and criminal charges under state law. Allowing exotic animals to escape or run at large carries additional penalties.
