Florida FWC regulates exotic pets via Class I/II/III permit system. Class I (lions, tigers, bears) prohibited as pets. Class II (macaques, wolves, alligators) require FWC permit. Class III (most reptiles, small mammals) legal for personal use without permit.
The FWC Captive Wildlife Office regulates possession of wildlife in captivity throughout Florida, including Hollywood. Animals are classified into three classes. Class I (large primates, big cats, bears, elephants, large reptiles) cannot be possessed for personal use. Class II animals require substantial experience and specific cage requirements before a license is issued. Class III includes most non-domesticated animals not in Class I or II, and requires a no-cost personal pet license. No permit is needed for many common exotic pets including non-venomous reptiles, gerbils, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, parrots, finches, and cockatiels. Hollywood's Chapter 92 may impose additional local restrictions. HOA rules may further limit exotic pet ownership. Contact Broward County Animal Care at 954-359-1313 for local guidance.
Possessing Class I wildlife as a personal pet: state violation. Possessing Class II or III without proper license: FWC citation. Local violations handled by Code Enforcement.
