Floyd County, IN Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Microchipping is governed through the county's animal control chapter, administered by the New Albany/Floyd County Animal Control Authority. Section 93.001 defines a MICROCHIP as "a passive transponder which can be implanted into an animal and which is a component of a radio frequency identification (RFID) system." The operative requirement sits in the impoundment article: under § 93.035(C)(1), once an owner applies to redeem an impounded animal, the shelter may release it "only upon the application for redemption and after being fitted with a microchip, to facilitate future identification of the animal and owner." The cost falls on the owner.

Section 93.035(C)(2) separately conditions release of any animal impounded twice within 12 months on spaying or neutering as well, so a repeat runner risks both a chip and a sterilization requirement before it goes home. The shelter's fee schedule at § 93.005(B) prices microchipping at $25, plus $15 if a tranquilizer is needed to safely implant the chip, and a footnote notes chips are available only by appointment and only after all fees are paid. The impound-adoption health care package folds a microchip into a bundled $72.50 charge covering spay/neuter and vaccinations as well.

There is no separate ordinance requiring every owned pet in the unincorporated county to carry a microchip from the outset; the requirement attaches specifically at the point an animal is impounded and its owner seeks its return, or through the shelter's adoption package.
