Lubbock requires microchip identification for all impounded animals before release, and strongly encourages microchipping at registration. Animal Services scans every intake and uses national registries to reunite lost pets with owners.
Lubbock Animal Services scans every dog and cat brought to the West 19th Street shelter for an ISO-compliant microchip and queries national registries such as AAHA Universal Lookup. Any animal impounded for being at large must be microchipped before release if it is not already; the chip is implanted at owner expense as part of the reclaim fee. Owners are responsible for keeping registry contact information current. Microchipping is also required for animals adopted from the city shelter and for breeders operating under an intact-animal permit. Tags alone do not satisfy the requirement.
Chip-implant fee added to reclaim cost, refusal of release until compliance, and citation if registry data is knowingly falsified or never updated after a move.
