Palatine, IL Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Village Code § 6-74, in article III of chapter 6 (Dogs and Cats), states that all guard dogs must be registered with the county department of animal and rabies control every year, must carry a current rabies vaccine, and must be microchipped for identification purposes. That is the only provision in the code that mandates microchipping outright; general dog and cat registration under section 6-71 requires registering the animal with the village and is valid for ten years, but the standard registration form described in section 6-72(b) only asks the owner to record the animal's microchip number and rabies number and expiration date if the animal already has one, rather than compelling every pet to be chipped.

Guard dogs sit in a different category because they are working animals kept for property protection, and the village ties their annual county paperwork, rabies compliance, and microchip identification together so that an escaped or seized guard dog can be traced back to an owner and property quickly. Enforcement of chapter 6 runs through the Palatine Police Department and the environmental health division, and section 6-16 sets penalties for chapter violations according to the village fine schedule.
