Palatine, IL Animal Ordinances: Beekeeping (2026)

Article IV of chapter 6, titled Beekeeping, consists of a single operative section, 6-92, General restriction. It provides that no person may keep bees in the village unless that person has filed a copy of their beekeeper's registration with the Illinois Department of Agriculture, issued under the state Bees and Apiaries Act (510 ILCS 20/2), with the Palatine village clerk, and that copies of renewal registrations must be filed with the clerk promptly after they are issued. Unlike the village's chicken-keeping rules in section 6-6(b)(15), which set out lot size, coop setback, fencing, and inspection standards, the beekeeping article does not add its own hive counts, setback distances, or zoning-district limits; the entire local control mechanism is the paperwork-filing duty tied to the state registration.

That makes the village clerk's office the point of compliance verification: a resident cannot lawfully keep bees on their property, even if they hold a current state registration, until a copy of that registration and each renewal has actually been filed with the clerk. Enforcement of chapter 6 generally runs through the Palatine Police Department and the environmental health division under the penalty structure in section 6-16.
