Palatine, IL Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 6.03 of the Village's zoning ordinance sets fence height by yard and by neighboring district. The baseline residential limit is 6 feet, but where a rear or interior side yard abuts property in a Business or Manufacturing District, fencing can run up to 8 feet. Decorative fencing in a front yard, or in a side yard abutting a street that itself abuts a front yard, is held to only 3 feet and limited to 20 linear feet total per yard. Pet enclosures and runs get their own 6-foot height ceiling and a 200-square-foot size cap, and cannot sit in the half of a rear yard that fronts a street.

The ordinance is specific about how height is measured: vertically from grade to the top of the fence, on the property where the fence stands, and the limitation applies to the fence and anything attached to it. Fence posts get an 8-inch allowance above the height limit purely for ornamental treatment, and the Director of Community Services can approve up to 6 additional inches on portions of a fence to work around drainage problems or uneven grade. Corner-lot owners in the R-2 and R-3 Districts get a narrower exception: where the primary entrance doesn't face the platted front yard, a 6-foot fence can go in with a 20-foot (R-2) or 25-foot (R-3) setback instead of following the full front-yard setback of the district, as determined by the Planning and Zoning Director.

Replacement of a legal nonconforming fence is allowed at its existing height and style, or a more open style, but the owner has to prove the fence's prior height and location before the Village issues a new building permit.
