DuPage County, IL Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

8 lists the required conditions every residential use in DuPage County's residence districts must satisfy, and Subsection E sets the pet cap: no more than four pets over four months old may be kept in any dwelling unit. The definition of pet in Section 37-302 shapes how the cap is counted: a pet is a domesticated animal, which may include but is not limited to a dog, cat, or miniature pig, customarily kept for pleasure and which typically spends a majority of its time in a dwelling unit.

That definition expressly carves out animals kept for agricultural or utility purposes, 4-H project animals, dangerous animals as separately defined, and horses, all of which are governed by their own district requirements rather than the four-pet cap. It also exempts small birds, fish, and reptiles from counting against the total, though they are still classified as pets. The four-month age threshold means a litter of puppies or kittens under four months old does not count toward the limit while the animals are still young. 8(E) itself; the cap is a flat numeric ceiling built into the required conditions for the district, not a permit-based allowance. 8(F), and its dangerous-animal restrictions live in Section 5-10 of the County Code, both of which apply independently of the pet count here.
