Alhambra adopts L.A. County Title 10, which makes it unlawful to feed nondomesticated predators or rodents. County Code 10.84.010 bars feeding coyotes, raccoons, foxes, opossums, and ground squirrels, with narrow exceptions, and a violation is a misdemeanor. Feeding wildlife attracts nuisance animals and is discouraged.
Wildlife-feeding rules in Alhambra come from Los Angeles County Code Title 10, adopted under Municipal Code Chapter 7.04. Chapter 10.84 (Feeding of Certain Predator Animals) provides in Section 10.84.010 that it is unlawful to feed a nondomesticated rodent or nondomesticated mammalian predator, unless the person is the lawful owner keeping the animal in accordance with the State Department of Fish and Wildlife, or, after notifying the responsible agency to pick up the animal, the person provides food to a trapped or injured animal. The section defines 'rodent' to include ground squirrels, and 'mammalian predators' to include coyotes, raccoons, foxes, and opossums. A violation is expressly a misdemeanor. The purpose is to prevent people from drawing in and habituating urban wildlife, which can create safety risks and nuisance conditions in a dense neighborhood. This rule operates alongside California Fish and Game regulations, which separately discourage and in places prohibit feeding big game and certain wildlife. Note that the county provision targets predators and wild rodents; it does not, by its terms, bar feeding songbirds, though bird feeders that attract rats or other vermin can trigger the county's rodent-harborage rules. Residents who encounter sick or trapped wildlife should call the agency rather than feed the animal.
Feeding coyotes, raccoons, foxes, opossums, or ground squirrels violates County Code 10.84.010 and is a misdemeanor. Conditions that attract or harbor rats or rodents can additionally violate County Code 10.68.030.
