Atlanta prohibits feeding wildlife that creates a nuisance. Intentional feeding of deer, raccoons, coyotes, or feral hogs is banned under both city nuisance rules and Georgia Department of Natural Resources regulations.
Atlanta Code Β§18 and state law under OCGA Β§27-3-15 discourage wildlife feeding that concentrates animals in residential areas. Feeding deer is effectively prohibited because it creates a public nuisance and supports chronic wasting disease spread. Raccoon and coyote feeding is banned. Bird feeders are allowed but must be maintained to avoid attracting rodents or bears where bears are occasional visitors on the northern edge of the metro. Feral hogs are a growing concern outside the city, but residents should report sightings to GA DNR. Feeding feral cat colonies is permitted under TNR (trap-neuter-return) programs coordinated with LifeLine Animal Project, Atlanta's shelter partner.
Warnings first, then citations under Atlanta Code. State fines may also apply for feeding species managed by DNR.
