Atlanta has no breed-specific dog ordinance. Georgia state law (HB 1367 / OCGA Β§4-8-4) prohibits local governments from banning breeds, instead focusing on dangerous and vicious dog designations based on behavior.
Atlanta Code Ch. 18 mirrors Georgia's Responsible Dog Ownership Law (OCGA Β§4-8-20 et seq.), which classifies dogs by behavior rather than breed. There are no bans on pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, or any other breed. Dogs determined to be dangerous or vicious based on specific incidents are subject to enhanced confinement, insurance, signage, and registration requirements. Owners of dogs classified as dangerous may be required to carry liability insurance of at least $50,000. Landlords, HOAs, or insurance carriers may apply their own breed restrictions, but the city does not enforce private breed lists.
No breed-based fines. Dangerous or vicious dog violations under Ch. 18 can result in mandatory surrender, fines, and misdemeanor charges.
