Compton's Parking Rules: The Rules That Matter

Preferential Parking Districts

Compton's Preferential Permit Parking Program lets residents petition the City Council to create permit-only parking zones that block nonresident commuter parking. A district needs a two-thirds resident petition or Council motion, findings that over 75% of curb space is occupied by outsiders, and a public hearing noticed at least 10 days out. The Business License Division issues the permits.

Loading Zones

Compton's Traffic Authority marks loading zones with a yellow 'LOADING ONLY' curb stencil and passenger zones with white 'PASSENGER LOADING ONLY' lettering under Municipal Code Section 12-3.7. No more than half of a block's curb length can be reserved for loading, and Section 12-3.8 caps a vehicle's stop at 20 minutes for materials and three minutes for passengers.

Commercial & Oversized Vehicles

Compton bars parking or standing any commercial vehicle rated 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or more in a residential zone at any time once warning signs are posted, under Municipal Code Section 12-3.22. The restriction covers R-A, R-L, R-M, and R-H districts and exempts emergency vehicles, City/utility trucks, an owner's own recreational vehicle parked on their own property, and delivery vehicles.
