Cherokee County, GA Building Safety: Building Permits (2026)

Section 14-1(a)(1) adopts the International Building Code and "further adopts Section 101 through Section 112 and Section 114 through Section 116 of Chapter 1 of such International Building Code for administration of such Code," the chapter of the IBC that includes its permit-application and issuance requirements. Section 14-1(a)(6) does the same for the International Residential Code with Georgia Amendments, adopting Sections 101-111 and 113-114 of its Chapter 1 for administration, plus Appendix S of the 2018 Georgia State Amendments for one- and two-family dwellings. The county similarly adopts the administrative chapters of the International Mechanical Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Plumbing Code (with a local amendment on maximum water flow fixtures), the National Electrical Code, and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, plus the International Energy Conservation Code as the county's energy code.

Section 14-1(c) makes the county official whose duties correspond to a named official in an adopted code the responsible enforcing official, and section 14-1(d) provides that where an adopted code conflicts with the county's own Code of Ordinances, the Code of Ordinances controls. At least one copy of every adopted code must be filed in the office of the director of building development services under section 14-1(b).
