Gainesville, FL Building Safety: Childcare Center Rules (2026)

Sec. 30-5.7 governs the use standards for day care centers, defined separately in the code's Table V-4 permitted-use chart under Sec. 30-4.16. That table lists day care centers as permitted by right in the RC, MH, RMF-5, and RMF-6 through RMF-8 residential districts, but the use is not allowed at all in the SF (single-family) district; an operator wanting to run a day care in an SF zone would instead need to qualify under the separate family child care home standards in Sec. 30-5.10.

Beyond the zoning-district use table, Sec. 30-5.7 layers on a single, specific site-design requirement in subsection A: a turnaround driveway or other vehicular area dedicated to the safe loading and unloading of passengers. The code directs that the walking distance from that loading area to the center's main building entrance be minimized, and it mandates a paved pedestrian path, at least five feet wide, connecting the loading area to the entrance, with marked crosswalks anywhere the path crosses vehicle circulation. The section opens by folding in every applicable state and county requirement for day care centers, so a Gainesville facility must also clear the state child-care licensing rules and Alachua County health standards in addition to this local site-design condition before it can open.
