Brockton, MA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Sec. 18-14 requires written permission from the inspector of wires before any person connects wires in the interior of a building to an outside circuit, an exception applying only to telephone company wiring. The inspector of wires, appointed under Sec. 18-1, has supervision over all electric and other wires erected on, over, or under any street, way, or building, must annually inspect their condition, attachments, insulation, supports, and appliances, and is authorized under Sec. 18-11 to shut off current on any unsafe installation until it is repaired to his instructions.

Sec. 18-16 sets the local fee schedule administered by the inspector of poles and wires: a $60 minimum residential fee, $250 per dwelling unit for new construction, $60 minimum for remodeling and additions, $15 minimum plus $1 per fixture for switches, receptacles, and fixtures, and service fees of $75 for services not over 200 amps plus $30 for each additional 100 amps. Permits issued by the inspector of poles and wires are held no longer than six months, after which a new application is required.

An additional $60 charge applies for a reinspection made necessary by defective work, improper mechanical execution, an incomplete job, or wrong application information, and the fee is doubled for anyone who performs the work without first taking out a permit. Commercial and industrial work carries its own separate fee schedule beginning with a $75 minimum single-inspection fee.
