Clark County, IN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Clark County Code of Ordinances Chapter 111 makes a contractor's license the prerequisite for pulling an electrical permit. 01(B) confines that licensing requirement to work done in the unincorporated areas of the county. 02 routes applications to the Executive Director of the County Planning Commission and requires passing the "block" master electrician examination given by the Examining Board; licenses run on a calendar year and must be renewed by January 2, with a 30-day grace period after which a $100 late fee applies before re-examination is required.

02(D). 03 sets the qualifications: an applicant must be at least 21 years old and have at least six years of electrical work experience, including a minimum of one year installing electrical work that meets the existing National Electrical Code, with up to four of the six years creditable through a technical school or college diploma. 04 creates a five-member Examining Board of licensed electricians appointed by the Board of Commissioners, which administers the block test at least twice a year and honors electrician's licenses already issued by the City of Jeffersonville, the City of New Albany or the Town of Clarksville when those licenses used the same block test. 02(E) also requires active license holders doing work for hire to carry liability insurance of $100,000/$300,000 per occurrence.
