Gilbert, AZ Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Sec. 10-32 adopts the "National Electrical Code, 2017 Edition," published by the National Fire Protection Association, "as amended by subsection 10-32-2," as the town's Electrical Code, with copies kept on file in the office of the town clerk for public inspection. The adoption places NEC 2017 requirements, including its permitting, inspection and installation standards, directly into Gilbert's Code of Ordinances as though set out at length. Enforcement of the Electrical Code runs through Sec. 10-50, which groups Sec. 10-32 with the town's other adopted technical codes (building, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, energy conservation, ADA, and residential codes) for a single enforcement track.

Before the town can cite a builder, contractor, property owner, or authorized agent for a violation of Sec. 10-32, the code compliance supervisor or a designee must give written notice describing the violation, what bringing the property into compliance requires, and the time allowed to do so. That cure period must be at least ten days, unless the building or fire code official determines the violation is an immediate safety concern, in which case the building or fire code's own emergency provisions take precedence over the standard notice period.

A citation may be issued by the code compliance supervisor, a code compliance inspector, a building inspector, the fire marshal, a Town of Gilbert police officer, or their designees, once the notice period lapses without correction, or immediately for safety emergencies. Each day the violation continues counts as a separate offense, allowing penalties to accumulate the longer noncompliant electrical work remains uncorrected.
