Hendricks County, IN Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 150.40(A) of the Building Regulations chapter requires that permit applications include plans and specifications showing, among other systems, the layouts of the electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems, before the county will process the request. Section 150.40(B) then makes the permit itself mandatory: a permit shall be obtained before beginning construction, alteration, repair, or placement of any building or structure, and every permit is issued by the Building Commissioner, with fees paid to the County Planning and Building Department. The Uniform Schedule at § 37.25(D) prices that electrical review at $60 for all principal and accessory uses, the same rate charged for a plumbing permit review.

The substantive building standard behind that permit is § 150.39, which incorporates by reference the building rules of the State Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission under 675 I.A.C., along with the International Building Code for commercial work, as later amended; the county does not separately name the National Electrical Code in this chapter, so electrical work runs through those incorporated state and ICC rules rather than a locally cited NEC edition. Once a permit issues, § 150.41 requires the Building Commissioner to review every application for compliance, and § 150.42 requires inspection of the work as it proceeds, with reinspection ordered if work is not ready when the inspector arrives. Section 150.46 requires all work to be performed in a good and workmanlike manner according to accepted trade standards, and § 150.45 bars a certificate of occupancy until the work, including its electrical systems, complies with the subchapter.
