Kenton County, KY Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 150 of the Kenton County Code of Ordinances splits general building regulation from electrical work. 489 to verify compliance with the National Electrical Code as incorporated in the Uniform State Building Code. 900. The Authority administers contractor and electrician examinations, issues, renews, suspends, and revokes licenses, sets examination and licensing fees, and reports disciplinary actions to the state Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction each quarter. 17 is the operative bar: nobody except a property owner working on their own property may install, alter, or repair wiring, devices, or equipment in the county without holding a contractor's license or being an electrician employed by a licensed contractor.

Applicants apply in writing to the Board, stating name, experience, and qualifications, and must pass the Authority's examination before a license issues. Advertising or holding oneself out as a licensed electrician without the license is separately unlawful. 01(B) assigns inspection duties for the electrical code, alongside the building code, to the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission, whose certified inspectors sign off on the work. 18 lets Kenton, Campbell, and Boone counties recognize each other's electrical licenses through interlocal reciprocity agreements, so a licensed contractor from a neighboring county does not need to re-test here.
