Lakewood, CO Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Lakewood Municipal Code Section 14.06.010 states: "The National Electric Code of the National Fire Protection Association, 2023 Edition, as adopted and amended by the State of Colorado, by and through the State Electrical Broad, is hereby adopted by reference as the Electrical Code of the City of Lakewood." (Ord. O-2024-20, adopted August 26, 2024, which replaced the chapter's prior 2021-derived text in its entirety.) Section 14.06.020 sets out the scope: "The purpose of the Electrical Code is to safeguard persons in buildings and their contents from hazards arising from the use of electricity for lights, heat, power, radio, signaling, and for other purposes.

The subject matter of the code is the regulation of electrical conductors and equipment installed within or on public and private buildings and other premises, including yards, carnival and parking lots, industrial substations, mobile homes, and recreational vehicles, as well as the conductors that connect the installations to a supply of electricity and other outside conductors adjacent to a premises." Enforcement runs through Section 14.06.030: anyone who violates the adopted code, fails to comply with an order issued under it, builds contrary to approved plans or a permit, or ignores a Board of Appeals or court order "shall jointly and severally, for each and every violation and noncompliance respectively, be subject to the penalties set forth in Section 1.16.020," and "each day that prohibited conditions are maintained shall constitute a separate offense." Paying one penalty does not excuse continued noncompliance; the city can still force removal of the prohibited condition.

Because the chapter is tied to Title 14's shared Chapter 14.02 permit and appeal framework, electrical permit applications, fees (set under Section 14.01.060) and Board of Appeals procedure (Chapter 14.12) follow the same structure as the rest of the adopted construction codes.
