Southfield, MI Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Southfield administers electrical work under the National Electrical Code, inclusive of the Michigan Electrical Code Rules, Part 8, which the city adopted by reference at Sec. 8.401 under authority of Section 8b(6) of the Stille-DeRossett Hale Single State Construction Code Act, 1972 PA 230, MCL 125.1508b(6). The same section also has the city administering the Michigan Residential, Rehabilitation and Uniform Energy Codes for electrical installations, with the Building Official or a designee registered under 1986 PA 54 collecting fees and issuing permits, plan reviews, notices, orders and certificates of use and occupancy; every person performing plan reviews and inspections must carry that same state registration.

A complete printed copy of the Michigan Electrical Code is kept on file at the city clerk's office for public inspection under Sec. 8.402. Fees for electrical permits, inspections and other electrical applications are billed under the schedule in Chapter 101 of the City Code rather than being set out in the adoption article itself, covering everything from service upgrades and lighting circuits to pool and spa wiring and hard-wired smoke alarms. Article V of the same chapter closes with a single penalty provision covering every trade code the chapter adopts, building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing alike, so an electrical violation carries the same criminal exposure as a violation of any of the other adopted construction codes.
