Upper Darby, PA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 262 of the Township Code adopts the Uniform Construction Code, 34 Pa. 2, the fee provision, is filled in as "See Township Fee Ordinance, as same may be amended from time to time," meaning electrical permit costs are set in the separate Fee Ordinance rather than a fixed dollar figure in the electrical code itself. Chapter 265, the Township's contractor-licensing article adopted in 2004, layers a licensing gate on top of that permitting structure. Under § 265-6B, a contractor cannot simply register as an electrical contractor; the company must employ someone who holds a master electrician's license, and critically, only that master electrician personally, representing the company, is permitted to apply for the electrical permit itself, not any other employee or officer of the firm.

To obtain the master electrician's license in the first place, § 265-6B requires the individual to prove to the Township that he has passed an examination administered by a competent organization the Director of the Department of Licenses and Inspection has approved. A previously licensed electrician who cannot show employment in the trade at any point during the preceding five years can be required, at the Director's discretion, to retest before the license is renewed.
