Full Breakdown
When Independence adopted the 2024 International Residential Code as its Residential Code under Section 4.13.001, the City Council specifically amended the code to delete Section R309, Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems, under Section 4.13.002. That means detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses built under the Residential Code in Independence are not required to install residential fire sprinklers, unlike jurisdictions that keep the IRC's sprinkler mandate intact. The deletion applies specifically to the Residential Code; multifamily and commercial construction instead falls under the separately adopted Building Code and Fire Code requirements for those occupancy types.
Violations & Fines
Not applicable. Section R309 was deleted, so Independence imposes no local fire sprinkler mandate to violate for one- and two-family homes; other building code violations still draw a fine up to $500.00.
