Salt Lake County, UT Building Safety: Building Inspections (2026)

After a Salt Lake County building permit is issued, the permit holder is responsible for scheduling inspections at each code-required milestone. Standard inspection sequence for new residential construction includes footing (before concrete placement), foundation and damp-proofing, underfloor plumbing and mechanical, sheathing and nailing, framing rough-in after rough MEP, insulation after framing approval, drywall or gypsum board nailing where fire-rated, and final combined inspection. Additional inspections apply for swimming pools (pre-gunite, pre-deck, barrier final), solar PV (rough and final with electrical), and gas piping pressure test. Inspections can be scheduled through the Salt Lake County Citizen Access Portal or by calling Building Services during business hours. Next-day inspection requests must be submitted before 4 PM the prior business day. The inspector leaves a correction notice identifying any deficiencies, and re-inspection fees apply after the second failed inspection on the same item. Work covered before inspection must be exposed at the owner contractor expense. All permits require a final inspection before expiration, typically 180 days from the last approved inspection. For new dwellings and commercial buildings, a Certificate of Occupancy is issued only after final inspections from building, planning, engineering, and health department as applicable are all approved. Attempting to occupy a structure before CO issuance is a code violation.
