Barrow County, GA Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Barrow County Code § 89-219(a) defines a 'home business,' the home occupation category that permits limited client contact, as one that does not involve the maintenance, repair, storage or transfer of merchandise received at the home. Because vehicle repair is, by definition, maintenance and repair work performed on property brought to the site by a customer, it falls outside what a home business is allowed to do anywhere in unincorporated Barrow County, regardless of zoning district. The outdoor storage and parking standard in subsection (d)(4)a reinforces the same limit from the equipment side: it is unlawful to store or park any business material, equipment or vehicle on a home business property unless it stays entirely inside the residence or an approved accessory structure, with only one paved-driveway business vehicle exempted for a resident's own use.

2 carves out a narrow exception solely for AG or AR agricultural zoning districts, where wreckers, dump trucks, flat-bed trucks, tow trucks, mechanical earthmoving equipment or other commercial vehicles may be kept at the home occupation site, but only if the vehicle is used exclusively for an agricultural purpose, not for a general auto repair business. Outside that narrow agricultural carve-out, keeping tow trucks, lifts, engine hoists or similar repair equipment at a residence for a repair business, and bringing customers' vehicles to the property for service, both exceed what section 89-219 allows a home occupation to do.

An operator who wants to run an auto repair or similar repair trade would need a commercial or industrial zoning classification rather than a home occupation special use approval.
