Troup County, GA Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Troup County's home-occupation rules draw a sharp line between general vehicle work and agricultural equipment repair. Sec. 7.3(6.2)(i)(v), part of the prohibited-use list for rural home occupations on lots over two acres, bars general automobile repair, parts sales, upholstery, or detailing, washing services outright; the same prohibition applies to smaller lots under the two-acre-or-less standards, so no residential lot in the unincorporated county can host a general auto-repair or detailing business regardless of acreage. The one carve-out is agricultural equipment repair, permitted under Sec. 7.3(6.2)(h)(ii) as a home occupation, but narrowly defined: it covers only machine and mechanical repair for vehicles, equipment, and machinery used in agricultural work, not general consumer auto repair.

That use is restricted to lots of five acres or larger, and any structure or area used for the repair work must be set back at least 200 feet from all property lines and screened so it is not visible from any road or adjacent property. Other listed prohibited home occupations in the same subsection include ambulance service, wrecker and tow-truck service, restaurant or catering food preparation, and veterinary services, reflecting the county's general approach of excluding vehicle-heavy, noise-generating, or high-traffic commercial activity from residential lots.

A business that wants to operate an auto-repair shop in unincorporated Troup County must instead locate on a commercially or industrially zoned parcel, where such uses are evaluated under the standard commercial-use standards in Sec. 6.1's permitted-use table rather than the home-occupation article.
