Full Breakdown

Under City Code § 10-1-54, law enforcement or designated city officials may tow and store an impounded vehicle themselves or arrange the tow through a wrecker company that has signed a contract with the city. Charges for towing and storage are fixed by that city-wrecker contract, not set by the tow operator, and the city manager may also award an exclusive towing contract to one or more companies. All costs fall on the vehicle's owner, and notice of the tow must be sent to the owner under § 10-1-198.

Violations & Fines

Impounded owners are billed the contract-set towing and storage fee; a wrecker company that violates its city contract terms forfeits the contract under § 10-1-54(d).
