Licensed marijuana establishments in Anchorage cannot locate within 500 feet of schools, recreation centers, or religious centers, measured under AMC Title 21.05 and 3 AAC 306.010 (Alaska Marijuana Control Board) buffer rules.
Anchorage Assembly Ord. 2015-90 implemented Ballot Measure 2 (2014) and codified marijuana zoning in AMC Title 21.05. Retail stores, cultivation facilities, manufacturing facilities, and testing labs require an MCB state license and an MOA conditional use approval. Buffers are measured from the nearest property line of the protected use to the nearest exterior wall of the licensed premises. Schools (K-12), recreation/youth centers, and buildings of religious worship are protected. Anchorage chose not to extend the buffer to colleges or substance-treatment facilities. Existing licensed locations are grandfathered if a new school later opens within the buffer.
Operating within a buffer without a properly grandfathered license can trigger MOA conditional-use revocation, MCB license suspension, and fines under AMC Title 21 enforcement.
