Peoria, IL Cannabis Regulations: Buffer Zones (2026)

Section 18-670 places two overlapping distance rules on cannabis businesses. First, no one may sell or deal in cannabis, cannabis concentrate, or a cannabis-infused product within 500 feet of the property line of any state-licensed child care facility, public, private, or parochial elementary, middle, or secondary school, university or post-secondary facility, or any building used for the education or recreation of minors or young adults under 21, and the same 500-foot buffer applies to houses of worship. For businesses that sell cannabis or cannabis-infused products, that distance is measured as an uninterrupted line from the school's property line to the business's property line, not around obstacles like buildings or streets.

Second, the code keeps dispensing organizations apart from one another: a dispensing organization cannot locate within 1,500 feet of the property line of a pre-existing dispensing organization, which caps how densely dispensaries can cluster even within the zoning districts that otherwise allow them. O and the licensing requirements in Division 3 of the same article, so a proposed site has to clear all three layers.
