Sugar Land's Development Code labels any hardwood tree with an 8-inch or greater caliper, measured 4½ feet up, a "Protected Tree." Site and landscape plans reviewed by the Director must map every Protected Tree on a development site, and builders must design around them where reasonably possible. Removing one requires Director approval and triggers a 2-for-1 replacement requirement, with credit toward landscaping if the tree is kept instead.
