Ocala, FL Code Violation Reporting: Common Violations (2026)

Ordinance No. 5873 added Division 4 to Chapter 2 of the Ocala Code, creating a direct-citation track for the violations the city sees most. Section 2-461(a) lists exactly which Code sections a code enforcement officer may cite on personal investigation without first taking the case to the municipal code enforcement board: Section 34-95 (weeds and accumulations of trash or unsightly matter), Section 34-122 (abandoned or derelict vehicles), Section 34-201 (littering and improper waste removal), Section 34-202 (distribution of handbills), Section 110-131 (prohibited signs), and Section 122-1193 (parking trailers and commercial vehicles in residential districts).

Before citing, Section 2-462 requires the officer to give notice and, ordinarily, up to 30 days to correct the problem, except for repeat violations or ones that are irreparable, such as work done without a permit, where a citation can issue immediately. Each citation must state the code section violated, the facts supporting it, and the penalty, and the recipient has 30 days to pay or get a court date in Marion County Court. Section 2-463 sets a maximum civil penalty of $500.00 per violation and, for the listed sections, a specific schedule: $100.00 for a first citation, $250.00 for a second within 12 months of the first, and $450.00 for a third or later citation in that same 12-month window.

A third violation in that period also triggers a mandatory notice to appear in county court, and willfully refusing to sign a citation is a misdemeanor under Florida Statutes Section 162.21.
