Setbacks in Yakima County come from two codes: the joint Yakima Urban Area Zoning Ordinance (YMC Title 15) inside the urban growth area, and Yakima County Code Title 19 for outlying rural land. Residential lots typically need a 20-foot front, 10-foot side, and 15-foot rear setback.

The minimum setback for residential accessory structures in all allowed districts shall be at least five feet from the side property line, five feet from the rear property line, and up to, but not within, the required front yard and applicable street setback, except garage and carport entrances must be set back at least 20 feet from any property line.
Building height in the Yakima urban area is capped by the Urban Area Zoning Ordinance (YMC Title 15). Single-family SR and R-1 districts limit structures to 35 feet, while the R-2 and R-3 multifamily zones allow up to 50 feet.
