Iowa City Code 8-6-2 sets an age-tiered curfew. Minors 13 and under may not be in public places between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Ages 14-15 are barred 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Ages 16-17 are barred midnight to 5:00 AM.
Iowa City Code 8-6-2, adopted by Ordinance 09-4376 (effective December 23, 2009), imposes an age-tiered juvenile curfew. No minor 13 or younger may be in any public place between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM unless accompanied by a responsible adult. The cutoff is 11:00 PM for minors 14 to 15 and midnight for minors 16 to 17. The ordinance carves out exceptions for parental accompaniment, lawful employment travel, supervised school or religious activities, and emergencies. It is also unlawful for a parent or guardian to knowingly permit or by ineffective control allow a minor to violate curfew. Iowa Code chapter 232 governs juvenile referrals.
A violation of section 8-6-2 is a simple misdemeanor punishable by a fine not over $50. Parents or guardians who knowingly permit a violation may also be cited. Repeat patterns may trigger Johnson County juvenile-court referral.
