Michigan MCL 722.751 authorizes local juvenile curfews. Detroit enforces a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for minors under 18. Dearborn, Livonia, and most suburban Wayne County cities have similar 10 or 11 p.m. curfews.
Juvenile curfew ordinances in Wayne County are authorized by Michigan MCL 722.751 through MCL 722.754 and enacted locally. Detroit prohibits minors under 18 from being in public places between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with exceptions for minors accompanied by a parent or guardian, traveling to or from work or a school-sponsored event, or responding to an emergency. Dearborn, Livonia, Westland, Taylor, and most other suburban Wayne County cities have similar curfews ranging from 10 p.m. to midnight depending on age and day of week. Violators may be taken into protective custody, returned to parents, and issued citations. Parents can be cited for habitual violations under Detroit's parental responsibility provisions. Constitutional challenges to curfew ordinances have generally upheld well-drafted ordinances with adequate exceptions. Enforcement is stronger during summer months and after major public events. Emancipated minors and 17-year-olds in some cities may be exempt.
