Royal Oak, MI Curfew Laws: Park Curfew (2026)

City Code § 515-13, part of Chapter 515, Parks and Public Recreational Facilities, sets a citywide curfew for every public park in the City of Royal Oak: all parks close at 11:00 p.m. and reopen at 6:00 a.m. The section was added in 1967 by Ordinance No. 67-20 and amended in 1969 by Ordinance No. 69-20. The Chief of Police holds separate authority to close any public park, or any section of one, during additional designated hours whenever the Chief finds it necessary, which lets police lock down a specific park or ballfield beyond the standard overnight window.

The ordinance requires the City to post appropriate signs advising the public of the hours during which a park is closed, and it flatly states that no person shall be in any park during closed hours. It carries one built-in exception: closed hours do not apply to authorized, organized activities such as baseball games, so a City-sanctioned league game can run past 11:00 p.m. without violating the section. Section 515-2 defines PARK broadly as any park, playground, recreation center, or other area owned or used by the City for recreation, and defines DIRECTOR as the Director of Recreation and BOARD as the Parks and Recreation Board, both of whom have supervisory roles elsewhere in the chapter.

Enforcement runs through § 515-15, which directs the Director of Recreation and City police to diligently enforce the article and gives them authority to eject any violator from a park.
