Kent County parks open at 7 a.m. and close at official sunset. Under the county Park Ordinance it is unlawful to enter or occupy a county park before opening or after closing, with limited exceptions for reserved shelters (until 10 p.m.) and campgrounds.
This is a genuine county-level rule. The Kent County Parks Ordinance, Section 32 (Park Hours), makes it unlawful during the park season, without a written permit from the Director, to enter or occupy a county park before its posted opening time or after closing time, which is official sunset as determined by the National Weather Service office for Grand Rapids. Exceptions include persons using a reserved enclosed shelter (who may stay until 10:00 p.m.), campground and Wabasis boat-launch reservation holders, and Johnson Park boat-launch users. Camping or remaining overnight without a permit is separately prohibited under Section 21.
A violation of Section 32(a) is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $500.00 or imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or both. The ordinance is enforced by the Kent County Sheriff Department.
