Canyon County, ID Drone Rules: Park Drone Restrictions (2026)

Section 04-01-11(7), Drones and Radio-Controlled Aircraft, was added to the parks article by Ordinance 16-020 in December 2016. It states that except when authorized by the director of the Canyon County Department of Parks, Cultural and Natural Resources, no person shall launch or land drones or other radio-controlled aircraft in any Canyon County park, and it spells out the reasoning: low-altitude operation poses safety risks, potential property damage, wildlife harassment, and interferes with the peaceful enjoyment of the parks. Authorization runs through the director personally, not through the park manager on-site or the waterways committee, so a flyer needs sign-off from department leadership before launching in a county park.

The rule sits alongside the wildlife-protection ban in Section 04-01-11(2), and low-flying drones over the sanctuary waterways and recreation areas the county designates can implicate both sections at once. The article's underlying authority comes from Idaho Code sections 31-714, 31-828 and 63-908. Enforcement runs through park managers and department staff the director deputizes as deputy sheriffs under Section 04-01-05(2), operating on county-owned park and waterway property in unincorporated Canyon County. The ban covers only property the Canyon County park system itself owns and operates; it does not restrict drone flights over Caldwell's, Nampa's or other incorporated cities' own parks, which regulate drones, if at all, under their own municipal codes.
