Piscataway, NJ Drone Rules: Park Drone Restrictions (2026)

Piscataway Township Code § 12-9.2, added by Ordinance No. 2020-35, requires 'Any person who wishes to fly any aircraft other than toy aircraft within any park' to first obtain a Township permit and show personal identification, and any aircraft larger than a 'small unmanned aircraft' (defined in § 12-9.1 as 0.55 pounds or less) must also register with the FAA and carry insurance, obtainable through an Academy of Model Aeronautics membership. The permit costs $25 per calendar year under § 12-9.3. Once permitted, § 12-9.4's operating rules apply: the drone must stay clear of manned aircraft, remain at least 100 feet from people, vehicles and structures in the park, fly no higher than 400 feet, display its registration number on an outside surface, and avoid high winds or reduced visibility.

Flying is banned for pilots under the influence of alcohol or drugs, surveillance or photography where there is an expectation of privacy is prohibited without consent, only one aircraft may be airborne per park at a time, and flights are restricted to 10:00 a.m. until dusk. The Chief of Police, Recreation Director or Public Safety Director can add further conditions in the permit itself under § 12-9.4.k.
