Macon-Bibb County, GA Environmental Rules: Vehicle Idling Restrictions (2026)

Sec. 28-95 of the general code, titled 'Time limit for idling,' bars stopping or standing any Macon-Bibb County-owned motor vehicle and idling it for more than fifteen minutes while not in traffic. The section then lists four exceptions. Emergency, construction and maintenance vehicles are exempt where the engine must run to perform the needed work. Idling is allowed up to twenty-five minutes where the vehicle is supplying heat or air conditioning necessary for passenger safety or comfort. Idling is likewise allowed up to twenty-five minutes if the ambient temperature is below thirty-two degrees Fahrenheit.

Vehicles whose primary idling energy source is compressed natural gas or electricity are exempt from the idling limits entirely. By its plain text the ordinance applies to county-owned vehicles, not private or commercial fleet vehicles operating within Macon-Bibb County; there is no general idling cap in this article covering privately owned cars or trucks.
