Yavapai County allows residential fences up to six feet tall and under 50 cumulative linear feet without a permit, unless they are masonry. Sight-visibility at corners and driveways must be preserved.
The county does not impose a flat maximum fence height in residential zones. Instead, six feet is the threshold that triggers a building permit. Under the county Fence Permit packet, a fence less than six feet tall, less than 50 cumulative linear feet, and not masonry does not require a permit. Anything over six feet, of 50 linear feet or more, or any masonry fence requires a permit. Fences over six feet are reviewed for structural design and wind load. Front-yard and corner-lot fences are subject to sight-visibility requirements. The Board of Adjustment may grant a fence-height adjustment of up to 20 percent.
Building a fence past the six-foot, 50-foot, or masonry threshold without a permit is a building code and zoning violation. Code Enforcement can require an after-the-fact permit, modifications, or removal. Sight-visibility hazards can be ordered abated by Public Works.
