Beloit, WI Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 8-300 of Chapter 19 requires a fence permit before installing, constructing, erecting or replacing any fence in the City of Beloit, issued by the Director of Planning and Building Services once the application, site plan and fee are on file; painting, maintenance or repair of an existing fence does not need a new permit. Paragraph h sets the height caps by location: in front or street-side setback areas, fences in residential, commercial and PLI districts are limited to 4 feet, while the M-1 district allows 6 feet and the DH district also caps at 4 feet.

In rear and interior side setback areas, the residential, commercial, PLI, M-1 and DH districts all allow up to 8 feet, and fences inside the buildable area of a lot can reach 8 feet in most districts and 10 feet in M-1 and DH. Height is measured vertically from the finished grade on the exterior side of the fence, and paragraph g bars raising fill just to gain fence height. Fences in a front or street side setback must also comply with the vision triangle rules of §8-400: under §8-401, nothing may block sight lines between 30 inches and 10 feet above curb grade within the triangular area formed at a corner or driveway intersection, measured the required minimum distance back from where the sight lines cross. Fences within 18 inches of a public sidewalk are prohibited outright.
