Under Buckeye Development Code Section 5.4.6, single-family front fences/walls (between the home and front line) may not exceed 3.5 feet, or 6 feet if in line with or behind the home. Residential side and rear fences/walls may not exceed 6 feet. Commercial/industrial side-rear limits are 8 feet (up to 10 with approval).
Buckeye's fence and wall heights are set in the Development Code (Chapter 7), Section 5.4.6 (Fences, Walls, and Screening). For single-family residential lots, 'no fence or wall... located between the principal structure and the front property line shall exceed three and one-half feet in height. A fence or wall in line with or behind the principal structure may be up to six feet in height.' For multi-family, commercial, and industrial developments, a six-foot wall is allowed between the structure and the front property line (placed at the back of any required landscape setback), and the Zoning Administrator may authorize up to ten feet to screen service, loading, or outdoor storage from adjacent residential uses. For side and rear yards, on single-family or multi-family lots 'no fence or wall... located between the principal structure and the rear or side property line shall exceed six feet in height,' with additional height allowed for retaining walls or elevated foundations; for commercial and industrial uses the side/rear limit is eight feet (up to ten with Zoning Administrator approval). Columns, pilasters, and similar narrow features may exceed the maximum by eight inches for up to two feet of run. The official Buckeye fence handout also describes measurement from the inside of the enclosure at natural grade.
Fences/walls exceeding these heights, or built without a required permit, can be cited as zoning/building violations and may require modification or removal; enforcement is through Buckeye Development Services and the city code's general penalty provisions.
