Full Breakdown

UDC Section 7.3.L.2 splits residential fence height by yard and fence type. In the front, corner side, and reverse corner side yards, an open fence (one you can see through) can reach six feet, but any other fence, wall, or hedge in those same yards is capped at three feet. In the interior side and rear yards, a fence, wall, or hedge of any type is allowed up to eight feet. Non-residential districts run differently under Section 7.3.L.2.b: fences, walls, and hedges are barred from the front or corner side yard altogether unless required by the Article 10 landscape and screening standards, though the eight-foot interior-side-and-rear allowance still applies. Public recreation areas get their own carve-out, up to eight feet of open fencing around every yard, and tennis courts can fence to national standards for that use.

Height is measured from the adjacent ground to the highest point of the fence, though decorative posts may exceed the limit by up to six inches under Section 7.3.L.1.c. A second, separate rule protects visibility at intersections: Section 7.1.E caps every structure, including a closed fence or wall, and all plantings, at three feet within the sight triangle formed at a street, alley, or driveway corner. A semi-open fence that meets the parish's other fence standards and does not block the sight triangle is still allowed there. Every fence, including a repaired existing one, needs a building permit under Section 7.3.L.1.a before it goes up.

Violations & Fines

A fence built over the height limit for its yard, or one that blocks the sight triangle at a corner lot, is subject to a Zoning Administrator compliance order under UDC Article 19, backed by injunctive action through the Parish Attorney if the owner does not correct it. Where the Code sets no specific fine, Code of Ordinances § 1-8 applies a default penalty of up to 30 days in jail, a fine up to $500, or both, with each day of continued violation a separate offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall can my front yard fence be in Caddo Parish?
Six feet if it's an open fence you can see through. A solid fence, wall, or hedge in the front, corner side, or reverse corner side yard is capped at three feet instead, under UDC Section 7.3.L.2.a. The taller six-foot allowance only applies to open designs.
What is the sight triangle rule for fences at corner lots?
Within the sight triangle formed at a street, alley, or driveway intersection, every structure, including a closed fence or wall, and all plantings, is limited to three feet under UDC Section 7.1.E. A semi-open fence that follows the parish's other fence rules and does not block the sight triangle is still permitted there.
Do I need a permit to build a fence?
Yes. UDC Section 7.3.L.1.a requires a building permit for all fences, including the repair of an existing fence. Every fence also has to be kept in good repair and safe condition once it's up, or the Zoning Administrator can order it fixed or removed.
