Section 260-59F(1)(b) permits a fence or wall in any required open space up to 3 1/2 feet in height, "except as otherwise required for screening," which effectively sets the front-yard ceiling for most lots. Section 260-59F(3)(a) raises that limit in a rear yard, or in any part of an interior side yard, to a fence or wall not to exceed six feet in height in any zoning district; barbed wire, razor ribbon, concertina wire and similar security fence topping are barred outright, while a tennis court enclosure may run up to 12 feet in any district.

Corner lots carry an added restriction under § 260-59E: where a front yard of 25 feet or more is required, no sign, fence, wall, hedge, shrub planting or tree foliage (except tree trunks) that obstructs vision between three and seven feet above street level may be placed within the triangular area formed by two intersecting curblines and a line connecting points 30 feet from their intersection; where there's no curb, the edge of pavement controls as determined by the Building Inspector. A related district-boundary rule in § 260-53A(6) requires a solid stockade-type fence along side and rear lot lines abutting an R District from a business or manufacturing lot, capped at six or 12 feet as permitted by § 260-59F(3)(a), and it cannot project into a required front yard.
