Clinton Township, MI Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

03(f) sets the Township's default fence height limit at four and one-half feet, with three exceptions. First, a fence made of material designed to obscure the property it surrounds may be taller if the Building Department determines the added height will not endanger public health, safety or welfare. Second, a fence in an industrial or commercial zoned district may exceed four and one-half feet when the additional height is necessary for the fence's purpose and the Building Department finds it will not be detrimental to public health, safety or welfare.

Third, fences surrounding private swimming pools in Residential Districts must instead comply with the swimming pool enclosure requirements of the current state building code, which effectively overrides the four-and-one-half-foot cap for pool barriers. Subsection (j) additionally bars any fence from standing in the front yard, or nearer to the street than the front building line, regardless of height, and subsection (k) requires fence posts and other supporting members to face inward toward the fence owner's own property, with the smooth side facing neighboring properties and the public way unless every adjoining owner signs a notarized approval and the Building Department Superintendent approves the change in writing.
