Clinton Township, MI Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

03 sets the Township's general fence-construction standards, and subsection (e), 'Barbed Wire or Electrically Charged Fences,' expressly prohibits both fence types across the Township. The only carve-out lets barbed wire be affixed to the top of a fence in an industrial or commercial district for protective purposes, and only if two conditions are met: the fence must be at least six feet high between ground level and the point where the barbed wire is attached, and the Building Department must determine the barbed wire will not endanger public health, safety or welfare.

Electrically charged fencing has no such exception anywhere in the chapter. 03 lists parallel material rules for metal, wood, plastic or synthetic, and masonry fences: metal fences must be new and treated against rust and corrosion, wood fences must be new and finished with decay-resistant treatment, and masonry fences need the written approval of every abutting property owner. Fences existing when the chapter took effect may not be enlarged, extended or replaced except in strict compliance with the current rules under subsection (i).
