Eden Prairie, MN Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 9.76, Subdivision 2 sets a single citywide ceiling: fences may not exceed 7 feet in height, and may be located in any yard, meaning the front, side or rear setback does not change the height limit as it does in many other cities. The section repeats that fences above 7 feet are prohibited and requires all fences to be constructed in accordance with the applicable Building Code, which the City has adopted by reference in Section 10.01. The 7-foot cap applies City-wide except where Section 9.76, Subdivision 5 exempts fences in the Park and Open Space District, which instead follow the fencing standards of Section 11.37, and except for the additional shoreland fence rules in Subdivision 4, which govern setback from the ordinary high water level and bar solid fencing in the shore impact zone regardless of the 7-foot cap.

A closely related but separate rule, Section 9.77, Vision Clearance, caps fences, hedges or other vegetation over 30 inches, and trees pruned below 8 feet, wherever the City Engineer determines they interfere with traffic sight distance, layering a lower height limit onto corner lots and driveway approaches on top of the general 7-foot cap. Both Section 9.76 and Section 9.77 were adopted by Ordinance No. 01-2025 on January 21, 2025, replacing earlier fence provisions.
