Fairfield Municipal Code Section 25.30 caps front-yard fences at 42 inches within 15 feet of the front property line and 7 feet beyond that. Street side yards are limited to 42 inches. Multifamily and commercial open decorative fences may reach 10 feet with Police Department written approval.
Under Chapter 25 (Zoning Ordinance), Section 25.30 of the Fairfield Municipal Code, single-family residential fences, walls, and hedges are limited to 42 inches in height within 15 feet of the front property line and up to 7 feet in height beyond that 15-foot zone. Fences in street side yards (corner lots) are capped at 42 inches the full length to preserve sight distance for drivers. Multifamily parcels and churches may install an open decorative fence up to 7 feet along any property line, increasable to 10 feet if set back at least 15 feet from the line and approved in writing by the Fairfield Police Department. Commercial owners may use the same 10-foot decorative-fence allowance with Police Department permission within the required street-frontage landscape setback identified in Table 25-10. Undeveloped parcels may have fences up to 7 feet (except in OSC open-space zones). The Planning Division (707-428-7461) reviews edge cases such as sloped lots or wedge-shaped corner properties.
Code Compliance issues an administrative citation under Chapter 1, Article II. Typical penalties are $100 first violation, $200 second within 12 months, and $500 thereafter. Owners must lower or remove non-compliant fences; continued non-compliance can lead to abatement and lien recovery.
