Fayette County, GA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Fayette County Code § 110-81 governs walls, fences and entrance structures in a front yard across the A-R district and all residential zoning districts, plus subdivision entrance walls. Subsection (b) sets the baseline for walls and fences up to four feet: posts, columns, light fixtures, ornamental statues and figurines are not counted toward that four-foot measurement, so a four-foot fence can carry taller decorative posts without tripping into the next height tier. Subsection (c) governs anything taller: a solid wall or fence cannot exceed four feet, and any portion above four feet must be at least 50 percent visibility, uniformly spaced over the entire linear run of the wall or fence, with columns and posts excluded from that visibility calculation.

Vehicular entry structures are carved out of both the four-foot cap and the 50 percent visibility rule within 35 feet of either side of the driveway. Where grade changes prevent a fence from holding a consistent height, § 110-81(d) requires stair-stepping each section between posts to comply as closely as possible. A handful of exemptions apply: corner-lot walls along an arterial or collector street built for noise reduction, temporary construction fencing, telecommunication tower fencing, stormwater-facility fencing, and fencing tied to nonresidential uses like kennels, cemeteries or churches.

Walls and fences lawfully built before October 1, 2008 that do not meet these standards are grandfathered as legally nonconforming. A zoning compliance certificate from Planning and Zoning is required before any front-yard wall or fence goes up.
